Update from Washington D.C.

Posted by Chris on 25th of April, 2010

Finally after a three-day delay, Bonnie and I finally managed to fly out from the UK through the creamy soup of ash hovering above Europe. Unfortunately the delay meant we only spent one night in Boston but considering the problems that others (including several friends) have had, our three-day delay in the big picture of things was a mere speed bump in our plans. That said, we would like to return to Boston one day.

For the last couple of days, we’ve been in Washington D.C. and our schedule is more or less back on track. We arrived on Thursday after a day-long bus trip from Boston via New York City. On following day we visited the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History and had lunch in Sculpture Garden, all are part of the Smithsonian Institute. We finished off the day with a three-hour long bike tour of the National Mall and the various monuments that give the city’s its distinct skyline.

Yesterday we concentrated on Capitol Hill and started the day with a tour of Congress. After that we did a tour of the Jefferson building in the Library of Congress, the world's largest library. The Jefferson Building featured prominently in the two National Treasure movies. After an unsuccessful attempt to visit the Supreme Court (it’s closed on weekends) we visited the National Archives and got to see original copies of the Magna Carta, the US Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.

Today we’re resting up our footsore feet but will probably venture out later this afternoon either back to the Smithsonian or to meet up with a fellow Trek America trekker. I’ll use the intervening time to post some photos.

cheerio,
Chris
