About us

Chris and Bonnie in Barcelona

Christopher Bill and Bonnie Stephen are a married couple who have spent the last three years living, working and travelling in the UK and Europe. Most recently we were based based in Bristol, but we have packed our backs, quit or jobs and are heading back to Australia via a two-month stint in North America. We both love to travel and share a common interest in history and archaeology.

Chris was born in Wales and emigrated to Australia with his family in the mid 80s. He is a technical writer and editor by profession and recently worked for one of Britain's largest software companies. One day he hopes to make a name as science-fiction and fantasy novelist. Aside from travel and writing, Chris enjoys watching Rugby Union, reading and building websites.

Bonnie is a GIS technician with a masters degree from the University of Melbourne. Most recently Bonnie worked as an asset technician for Interroute, which manages a large chunk of the UK's motorways on behalf of the Highways Agency. Bonnie is a keen swimmer and loves reading epic science-fiction by the likes to Peter F. Hamilton.

Why we’re doing this…

This site is intended to keep our family and friends informed as we slowly make our way around the world. It also serves as a journal of record for ourselves; a means of doccumenting what we've done and where we've been since January 2007.

We welcome all visitors and hope that the content posted here will inspire and entertain.

A common question is: why have we bothered creating our own site when there are services like Facebook that provide this function for free? Following is a list of reasons:

  • Creating and hosting our own site gives us far greater control over content and the technology used to deliver it.
  • It leverages a lot of skills (design, programming, database management) that have served us well in our professional lives.
  • It offers a greater sence of permanancy than what is offered by Facebook or MySpace and other social networking sites .
  • It is much more accessible to people who do not use a particular social networking site.

About the site

This site is built using W3C standards compliant xHTML and CSS. The site's core is written in PHP, a dynamic, object-oriented scripting language similar to Perl with C-like syntax.

The site is best viewed in Safari, Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 8. Note that IE 7 and other older browers may not render the pages correctly because they are not standards compliant. We have no intention of optimizing the site for any Microsoft-based browser (prior to version 8). Do yourself a favour and get the Fox and get a Mac while you're at it.
